Ontario International Airport
Opened in 1923 as a landing field and now operated by the Ontario International Airport Authority, the airport serves 7.1 million passengers annually and functions as a major hub for cargo operations and domestic connections.
Ontario International Airport began in 1923 as a modest airfield near an orange-packing company, initially called Latimer Field. The City of Ontario purchased the land in 1929 and expanded it into a municipal airport. During World War II, federal funding supported new runways and the site became a military training base. After the war, Pacific Overseas Airlines selected Ontario as a headquarters and Asian gateway, bringing international prestige and establishing routes that would later support Thai Airways International.
Today, Ontario International Airport is owned and operated under a joint-powers agreement by the City of Ontario and San Bernardino County through the Ontario International Airport Authority, which assumed local control in 2016. The airport operates two passenger terminals serving major carriers including Delta, JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, and Southwest. Beyond passenger service, ONT functions as a hub for UPS Airlines and FedEx Express, and serves as a focus city for Amazon Air, making it a critical node in the region's logistics and e-commerce networks.
